Supported Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) informed skills training is based on “The Skills System” developed by Julie Brown. She created a system for teaching emotional regulation skills to people who are unable to manage the cognitive load of DBT.
The skills training is delivered to groups of up to ten people. The group is run like a class where the group leader teaches the skills and assigns homework for clients to practice using the skills in their everyday lives.
The training involves attending a 90-minute session each week, for 24 weeks.
The training is delivered in a private practice room by a Psychologist.
Participants attend group training with a family member, carer or support worker, we call this person a “Skills Coach”. The Skills Coach works with the participant to use the skills in day to day life.
Skills Coaches need to attend all sessions so it’s important for participants to choose a coach that is available for all sessions and that they see during the week outside the sessions.
